Tuesday’s Tip of the Week: Focus On Speed Instead of Break On Long Putts

To stroke a perfect putt, two major keys are needed to be executed perfectly. They are to have the correct speed and to play the correct break. However, sometimes it is tough to do both perfectly on longer putts, known as lag putts. Speaking from experience, it is always more important to have the correct speed over the correct break on these long putts. If you have the speed down on lag putts, it is almost impossible to miss a putt by more than 3 feet. However, if your speed is off, it is really easy to miss a putt by 5 feet or more. Just think about it. Say you have a 40 foot putt that breaks two feet from left to right. If you aim right at the cup with the correct speed, and don’t take the break into play, the ball will probably come within 2 to 3 feet from the cup, an easy two-putt. However, if you aim 2 feet left of the cup with too much pace, you would miss the cup since you put too much speed on the putt, and would probably be at least 3 feet away from the cup, not an easy two-putt. So all in all, focus on speed during the long putts, and you will be two-putting every green in no time.
